Pergola questions come up all the time in home and landscaping forums: are budget brands much worse than the premium ones, will it survive a storm, can it go on a deck, and what about bugs and privacy? We went through the same list before buying, so here's where we landed.
Pergola or hardtop gazebo?
We started out shopping for pergolas and ended up with a hardtop gazebo, because we needed a real roof. Open slats wouldn't keep rain off our deck or send it away from the house. The slanted roof does both.
Is a budget one that much worse than a luxury brand?
It's not a premium aluminum frame, and it doesn't pretend to be. For the price it surprised me in a good way. The roof seals tight with no leaks when it's installed correctly, and it looks a lot more expensive than it was.
Will it hold up in storms?
Ours has held up great in storms and still looks sharp.
Can you put one on a deck?
Ours is on our deck, and it fits well. It would work on a patio too.
How do you anchor it?
I bolted ours down with the lag bolts that came in the box. I didn't need any extra hardware.
Does it help with privacy?
That was one of our main reasons for buying it. Our back neighbors sit uphill from us and could see straight into a big back door. The gazebo blocks that view.
What about bugs and mosquitoes?
It came with curtains and a bug net. We only put up the net, and it's all we needed for summer nights.
How hard is the install?
It depends on your building skills. You might enjoy it, or you might rage out over a weekend. I did it mostly solo over 3–4 afternoons. Two people could probably finish it in a day.
- The instructions are dense, so trust the diagrams.
- Pay close attention to which way the panels and brackets face.
- When you raise the main support bars, have at least two helpers and a ladder.
- There's a lot of packing material, so plan a cleanup session afterward.
